Why Re-Assess?

HSE Compliance

The Health and Safety Executive publication Rider-Operated Lift Trucks: Operator Training – Approved Code of Practice and Guidance – L117 covers all fork lift truck usage in the UK. It states:

“There is no specific requirement to provide refresher training after set intervals, but even trained and experienced lift truck operators need to be re-assessed from time to time to ensure that they continue to operate lift trucks safely. This assessment, which should form part of a firm’s normal monitoring procedure and be formally time-tabled to ensure that it is done at reasonable intervals, will indicate whether any further training is needed."

In addition to routine safety monitoring, re-assessment might be appropriate where:
  • operators have not used trucks for some time
  • operators are occasional users
  • operators appear to have developed unsafe working practices
  • operators have had an accident or near miss
  • there is a change to working practices or the working environment

Identify Risks

Virtual Risk Manager – FLT gives the manager the ability to monitor the progress of all operators as they work through the program, with its unique Management Information System (MIS).

Each operator is assigned a broad risk rating (low, medium or high) for their Exposure, Attitude, Knowledge, Behaviour and Hazard Perception – highlighting any areas where some form of training might be needed, and allowing the manager to prioritise resources according to each operator’s needs and risk level, for the biggest safety benefit.
